Do You Want to Disciple in Small Groups?

Deciding What Your Next Bible Study Should Be

by Elizabeth Marks

How does your small group decide what Bible Study to do next?

There are many ways to select a study. For example, you could choose a specific book of the Bible to study inductively all the way through. If you are not familiar with inductive method, you might consider using the Beginner's Guide to Inductive Bible Study Puzzle. It is a helpful study puzzle that teaches the inductive study method in a fun, non-threatening way.

Another suggestion is to choose a topic and study what the Bible says about that topic. Some people like to read topical devotions in small groups. Topics like the fruit of the Spirit or the armor of God or Proverb 31 Woman are all great choices.

Still others prefer to study an Old Testament passage, and then switch to a New Testament passage. Whichever method you choose the important thing to remember is to allow your small group to collectively decide. Giving them an opportunity to vote for the next study creates an emotional "buy-in" that helps them be more committed to the study.

Father God above,we are your disciples. Equip us to study with diligence and teach your word with authority and truth. Let us not neglect our responsibilities for shepherding the small groups you have entrusted to us. We led as we are lead by you. Help us help them to grow in Christ. In Your name we pray. Amen.

Faith Needs to be Tested to Prove it is Faith
by Elizabeth Marks

Have someone volunteer to read 1 Peter 1:7 aloud.  Ask the group about fire and gold.

What happens when gold is put in a fire?  (Answers might sound like the impurities are burnt out of the gold, or the gold becomes stronger.)

Why is our faith precious to God?

How is our faith tested with fire?

Ask your small group members to share a time they felt they faith was tested by a  particular trail. In what ways did their faith grow? What did they learn about God or themself from that experience?  How would they encourage someone who may be going through something similar now?
