Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you.” Proverbs 4:8-9 NKJV
Did you notice the condition in the first two words “exalt her”? With these two little words we are instructed to hold wisdom in the highest position. Wisdom above all else. That’s interesting. Mark 12:30 says this of the Great Commandment: “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” Doesn’t that mean put God first in all we do? Yes it does.
So why does this verse tell us to put wisdom first? God is wisdom. When we seek wisdom we seek Him. When we exalt God, put Him in proper position in our lives, He takes care of everything else. Proverbs 3:19 says “The LORD by wisdom founded the earth;” Isaiah 66:2 says “For all those things My hand has made, and all those things exist,” Says the LORD.” John 1:3 says “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
Notice with me the second condition “embrace her”. This indicates we must accept, believe and take in the wisdom God offers. When we step across the line of unbelief into believe in Jesus Christ, God says we have an ornament of grace and a crown of glory on our head.
Think about this. The bible is clear that mankind is sinful. Romans 3:23 says “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Nothing imperfect or sinful can stand before God Almighty in His Holiness. However, God so loved the world He gave His Son to die for it. God came in human flesh, died on the cross to pay the penalty of death for us who deserved it. Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus perfect, sinless, God took away our sins and the penalty of sin by dying in our place.
Those who believe in what God’s done for them are granted grace. They are no longer condemned because of sin. Romans 8:1 says “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” Jesus wiped away the record held against us. Grace is poured out on those believers. Jesus’ own righteous now covers the believers which makes it possible for us to approach God. When God looks on us He sees Jesus’ righteousness not our sinfulness because in Christ we are new creations.
But all these wonderful benefits come only as we meet the condition of coming to Jesus Christ and accept Him as Lord and Savior. What’s holding you back from making the best decision of your life?
Lord Jesus, thank you for loving us so much you were willing to die in our place. Thank you for your grace. Help us to put you first in our lives. In your name we pray. Amen.
In His Grace,
